3 Victories over poverty Programming Highlights: 69 In 2009 (FY09) CARE supported more than 800 poverty-fighting projects in 72 countries to reach more than 59 million people. Here are some highlights of our work in 2009 to empower women and families around the world: B J A G CARE and our partners reached more than 30 million people with information and services to improve their health, including family planning, maternal and newborn care. Our programmes helped 10 million people protect themselves from HIV/AIDS, reduce stigma associated with the illness and mitigate the negative economic consequences of the epidemic. CARE s education programmes provided almost 7 million people with improved access to school and better quality education. Our economic development programmes helped more than 9 million people gain access to credit, acquire skills to start or expand their businesses and improve their income. CARE's water and sanitation projects increased access to safe water and improved health and hygiene practices for over 5 million people. Almost 10 million people participated in CARE projects to improve crop production, increase household income, adapt to a changing climate and promote the sustainable use of natural resources Our emergency preparedness and response projects reached 10 million people, with special emphasis on the needs of the most vulnerable: children, women and the elderly. 8 Our Vision We seek a world of hope, tolerance and social justice, where poverty has been overcome and people live in dignity and security. CARE International will be a global force and a partner of choice within a worldwide movement dedicated to ending poverty. We will be known everywhere for our unshakable commitment to the dignity of people. A Global Movement CARE is a leading humanitarian organisation fighting global poverty. Nonpolitical and non-sectarian, we operated in 2009 in 72 countries around the world, reaching almost 60 million people in the poorest communities. CARE tackles underlying causes of poverty so that people can become selfsufficient. We deliver emergency aid to survivors of natural disasters and war and stay on to help people rebuild their lives.
