1 Project Title: Partner PSTD Chapter Project Duration: PSTD HELPS CDO TYPHOON SENDONG VICTIMS (RELIEF ASSISTANCE) PSTD RATIONALE/STATEMENT OF NEED Background. Recorded as the seond highest natural disaster in Mindanao with a total death toll placed at 1,249, 84 missing, 4,594 injured, 12,805 houses totally damaged and 29,520 partially damaged (NDRRMC Report as of December 29, 2011), Typhoon Sendong (Washi) left most of the people in the cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan devastated, homeless, and now faced with the challenge of rebuilding their lives. The disaster has also been reported to have affected a population of 113,411 families or 720,860 persons in 789 barangays and 8 cities in the 13 provinces of Regions VI, VII, IX, X, and ARMM, two of these Regions of which are found in Mindanao. Of these figures, Northern Mindanao claims to be the worst and hardest hit with a death toll of 771 and 45, 035 families affected in Misamis Oriental and 381 and 16,560 families in Lanao del Norte. The aftermath and the mark of Typhoon Sendong is indeed horrible and undescribable, and painfully leaves one battled question: How do we rebuild the lives of youth and adults who are left victims of this tsunami in reverse. This question must be addressed and answered by both government and the private sectors. The Issues/Problem. Foremost of the social problems left by disaster include the following: Thousands of youth and adults have been displaced due to Typhoon Sendong (Washi) leaving them homeless and without FOOD, CLOTHING AND SHELTER (Immediate) Rebulding the victims lives require immediate, medium, and long-term and sustainable interventions and solutions. The Community Need. The most important need of the victims right at the onset were potable water, food, clothing and medicines. Thousand of those victims are now congested in the evacuation sites.
