3 1 The European Investment Bank is the lending arm of the European Union. It is the world s largest multilateral lender and the biggest provider of climate f inance. 5 3 The Bank provided more than 19.6 billion to f ight climate change in That is nearly 30% of our total f inancing. Our priority The European Investment Bank focuses on four areas: innovation, small businesses, climate and infrastructure. The combined expertise of our economists, engineers, f inancial analysts and climate specialists ensures the success of our projects. In turn, the stamp of approval from our specialists triggers more investment from the private sector. We work to improve people s lives. In 2017, we made drinking water safer for 23 million people, built safer roads for millions of drivers and brought better electricity to more than 10 million households. Besides helping the European Union, the Bank works in EU pre-accession countries and other non-eu nations in Eastern Europe and the Mediterranean. We also operate in Asia, Latin America, Africa, and in Caribbean and Pacif ic countries.

7 5 With EIB support, the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics in Nicosia renovated its research and treatment facilities. The Bank helps secure jobs in thousands of small businesses. We helped 285,800 small companies f ind f inancing in We make Europe more competitive by supporting cutting-edge innovation and climate action. We enabled 7.4 million high-speed digital connections in 2017 and f inanced 16.7 billion in projects that support biodiversity, clean air and renewable energy. To invest in Europe s youth, we f inanced better schools for 1.1 million students. One of our newest tools is the European Fund for Strategic Investments. It aims to f ix the big investment gap in Europe by creating 500 billion in investment by By the end of 2017, the EIB Group had approved 51.3 billion in f inancing and mobilised total investment of billion under the EFSI programme.

We support small companies through local banks and lend money to innovative start-ups. Mid-cap companies can receive direct support for research and development investments. We do not lend more than half of the cost of a project, because we want our loans to crowd in f inancing from private investors and other public f inancial institutions. The Bank offers a wide range of f inancial products on favourable terms. For certain projects that help innovation and skills in Europe, we accept more risk than a commercial bank. We of fer technical assistance to help prepare and implement projects.

We raise money by issuing bonds on international capital markets. We are one of the largest and greenest multilateral borrowers on the global markets. Our bankers invented the green bond market.
