2017 ANNUAL REPORT S E E D see how it grows...
SINCE 2001, The Catholic Community Foundation has supported effective philanthropy in Southeastern Wisconsin through two main roles: Helping donors establish permanent charitable funds to create long-lasting support for the causes they care about Offering parishes, schools and other Catholic organizations cost-effective, socially responsible investment management to keep endowment assets growing D E A R F R I E N D S This year s annual report for The Catholic Community Foundation highlights the power of growth over time. Our featured donors, Les and Erin Blum, have been married 45 years, and as their relationship and family have grown, so has their charitable giving. This year they planted the seeds for an enduring legacy through the Les and Erin Blum Family Fund, seeking to support the causes that matter to them for decades to come. The Catholic Community Foundation makes it easy to see how gifts today can yield long-term results. We help our donors bring hope to children, families, and people of all ages who face poverty, discrimination and violence. Through cost-effective, socially responsible investment management, the Foundation and our donors help schools, parishes and other agencies grow stronger. Through carefully considered and monitored grants, we help a wide range of charitable organizations make life better. At our fiscal year-end, Foundation assets the source of this help were over $98 million. Grant awards totaled $993,334 this year and more than $8.1 million since our inception in You can see a list of the most recent recipients starting on page 11. As a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) corporation, the Foundation is independent of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. Our board of directors includes Catholic religious and community leaders. With our donors, we sustain and spread Catholic values here in Southeastern Wisconsin. And we are here to help you create your legacy. Together, let s nurture the seeds of today s gifts for a harvest that reshapes tomorrow. Mary Ellen Markowski President David M. Morris Chairman of the Board November
S E D Les and Erin Blum enjoying the garden at their Grafton home PLANTING FOR PERPETUITY For Les and Erin Blum, charitable giving has been as much a part of everyday life as raising children, working hard at a career and going to church on Sunday. 2
We ve always tried to tithe our income, Les says. Early in their marriage, that income came from two jobs, with Les an engineer for Opus Group and Erin a commercial artist who designed some of the first patterns for Mardi Gras paper towels and napkins. When Les was transferred to Wisconsin, Erin left the corporate world to focus on their family, which eventually grew to five children. Erin kept up her skills by giving art lessons from home. And the couple kept up their charitable donations. We had an annual list of where we wanted to give, Erin says. Then, in 2008, Les was invited to join The Catholic Community Foundation s board of directors. Les served on and then chaired the Foundation s grants committee, which reviews requests for funding. He says the experience was eye-opening. There are so many needs, and so many good organizations in Southeastern Wisconsin that people don t know about, he says, citing examples such as food pantries, medical care providers and groups to aid veterans. And there are some needs you wouldn t expect. For instance, through the Foundation s 15 th Anniversary Grant A Wish Contest, a rural Wisconsin parish received a grant for hymnals so people could sing during Mass. Another parish wants to add a shelter to a bus stop on their property. I think it s a positive when board members start their own donor funds. It shows a commitment that goes beyond volunteering. It shows we believe in the Foundation. I ran a construction development company, and I had contacts, which are always helpful, says Les, who has served on other boards. But The Catholic Community Foundation also wanted me for my beliefs. The Foundation s work complemented his faith, he says, and he enjoyed seeing firsthand how donors changed lives. 3
MORE SEEDS NEEDED Now is the time to plant seeds with The Catholic Community Foundation, supporting causes that further the Church s mission. As a perpetual endowment, the Foundation seeks ongoing growth to meet ever-growing needs. We make philanthropy easy: Start a fund, or give to an existing fund, with a gift of cash, securities or other assets. We can help structure your giving to fit your goals. Your gift is pooled with other funds in a diversified, socially responsible investment portfolio to minimize costs and maximize return potential. Investment returns add to your fund, supporting grants for your causes. You can be as involved as you choose in the annual grant awards. You support important causes while reaping the benefits of professional investment management and experienced charitable fund administration. Start your charitable giving garden today! The more Les talked about the parishes, schools and charitable organizations helped by the Foundation, the more Erin s interest grew. We started thinking about making a gift to establish our own donor fund, she says. Our decision underscores our belief in The Catholic Community Foundation. They re doing things right. Adds Les, I think it s a positive when board members start their own donor funds. It shows a commitment that goes beyond volunteering. It shows we believe in the Foundation. So in 2016, the couple made a gift to establish the Les and Erin Blum Family Fund within The Catholic Community Foundation. It s a donor-advised fund, which means Les and Erin recommend charitable organizations for grants, with the option to change grant recipients from year to year. They plan to make their first grant recommendations for the Women s Care Center, which provides free, confidential counseling, education and ongoing support to women facing unplanned pregnancies; the Veritas Society, which is the mass media program of the Wisconsin Right to Life Education Fund; and the Catholic grade school that Les attended in Illinois. These organizations all fit into our values and beliefs, Les says. We started thinking about making a gift to establish our own donor fund, she says. Our decision underscores our belief in The Catholic Community Foundation. They re doing things right. 4
The Blums children support their parents charitable giving. Says Erin, They re all on their own now, and they see that this is our thing our opportunity to help causes important to us. They can donate to the fund if they choose. And I hope our life and values are examples of Catholic beliefs that will continue with them. That s another reason the Blums chose to start a fund with the Foundation. We could have just made a gift to the Veritas Society, and they d spend it, and it would be gone, Les says. Instead, since the Foundation is a perpetual endowment, the Blums gift will be pooled with other funds and invested to maximize potential return. While Les s board term ended this year, he remains on the Foundation s investment committee. That committee is top-notch, very professional, he says. It includes money managers, CFOs smart people. I ve learned a lot from them. Says Erin, We like the idea that through the Foundation, the money can be managed well. Our gift can keep growing and giving, even after we re gone from this earth. With Les retired, the Blums have more time to give back to the community and to pursue their interests. Erin now puts all I can into her art, teaching water color classes, creating commissioned works and selling through local shops and galleries. Her work can also be seen at Les is in charge of the large garden, but they share household tasks and cooking. When Erin paints, I enjoy being the chef, but if I have something going on, Erin cooks. Their backyard view of the Milwaukee River led the couple to a new hobby. We d watch kayakers come down the river and decided we should try it, Erin says. Now the Blums try to bike or kayak at least once a week. Longer trips are often combined with family visits. We have 14 grandchildren, Erin notes. This spring alone we had three First Communions! While they remain active in charitable giving, the Blums aren t looking for recognition. I promote my art, but I m private in my personal life, Erin says. I hope by telling our story, we can bring attention to who The Catholic Community Foundation is a living legacy of giving in Southeastern Wisconsin. Les encourages others to start their own donor fund within the Foundation, adding, I hope we can encourage people to give! n 5
S E D Board member Judy Keyes supports Notre Dame School of Milwaukee through her donor fund as well as her volunteer tutoring sessions PLANTED FOR THE FUTURE Through the Foundation, you can give to a Catholic cause or causes that further the Church s mission, primarily in Southeastern Wisconsin. Your gift is invested in a permanent endowment, from which we award grants each year. 6
