7 A History of Excellence More than 90 years in the forefront of arbitration Hughes Hubbard was founded by Charles Evans Hughes, who went on to be the premier litigator of his day, a candidate for President in one of the closest elections in U.S. history, U.S. Secretary of State and Chief Justice of the United States. In 1926, Hughes was appointed as a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration at the Hague and in 1928 served as a U.S. delegate to the Pan American Conference on Conciliation and Arbitration. Today, Hughes Hubbard arbitrators continue to act as leaders in major arbitral institutions. Our practice includes a former U.S. member of the ICSID panel of arbitrators who also served as chairman of the board and of the executive committee of the American Arbitration Association and is currently chair of the Law Committee of the AAA and a vice president of the Court of Arbitration of the LCIA.
