In 008, the largest dollar value increases were seen in the mining & quarrying and oil & gas extraction sector and the combined finance and insurance, real estate and renting & leasing, and management of companies & enterprises aggregate sector. The mining and quarrying, and oil & gas extraction industry increased by $6.0 million, or 56.3%, from a revised figure of $46. million in 007 to $7. million in 008. The finance and insurance, real estate and renting & leasing, and management of companies & enterprises industry grew by $8.0 million, or 3.%, from a revised total of $46.7 million in 007 to $54.7 million in 008. The third largest dollar value increase was seen in the public administration sector, which increased from a revised figure of $37.6 million in 007 to $3.7 million in 008, a difference of $5. million, or.6%. 8 This analytical report presents Statistics Canada s latest estimates of the Yukon s Real GDP by industry in chained 00 (inflation-adjusted) dollars for and Nominal GDP by industry in current (not adjusted for inflation) dollars for The figures are subject to revision. Statistics Canada has adopted the chain Fisher volume index method of calculating the inflation-adjusted, or real, gross domestic product (GDP). The reason for the adoption of this method is twofold: it produces the most accurate measure of growth in GDP and its components; and the change brings the Canadian measure in line with the US quarterly Income and Product Accounts which also use the chain Fisher formula to measure real GDP. Use of the chain Fisher index has also been recommended by the United Nations System of National Accounts 993, chapter 6. An important consequence of using chain indexes is that the associated volume measures are not additive. That is, the sum of the chained values for each component of an aggregate does not equal the chained value of the aggregate. For example, the sum of the components of the Transportation & Warehousing Industry is not equal to the number given for that industry, just as the sum of the individual industry sectors is not equal to the number given for All Industries. For more information, visit: nea-cen/gloss/iea-crd-eng.htm The estimates contained in this publication are produced by Statistics Canada s Input-Output Division, and are reconciled with the overall provincial/territorial GDP figures produced by Statistics Canada s Income and Expenditure Accounts Division (IEAD). While the general concepts followed in compiling these estimates are consistent with those underlying the IEAD, there still remains conceptual differences between the GDP at market prices and GDP at basic prices. Note on the definition of the Public Administration Industry: Economic units (companies or establishments) are classified together in the same industry if they are engaged in the same or a similar kind of economic activity. The industrial grouping does not depend upon whether the activity is carried on by a government agency or by a business enterprise. Because so much of the activity commonly understood as government is reallocated and assigned to its related industrial group in the industrial distribution, the Public Administration industry shown in these tables provides a limited view of the full range of government activity. It includes only those establishments of government which clearly do not belong to any other branch of economic activity, but which are essentially concerned with general administration, the internal service agencies of the public sector, and defence.
