The Business Barometer dropped to 67.9 a good 7 points below last month's level. However, the other indicators have not seen this downgrade. Short-term hiring plans remained consistent with those of March: per cent of owners are looking to hire and 9 per cent are looking to cut back. Short-term employment plans improved slightly with about per cent of owners looking to hire and 13 per cent foreseeing layoffs. The general state of business indicator maintained its strength. About 41 per cent of respondents say their firms are in good shape, while per cent say their businesses are in bad shape. Employment plans are negative with per cent of owners looking to hire and per cent planning to reduce staffing in the next 3-4 months. The general state of business deteriorated slightly with 32 per cent of respondents saying their businesses are in good shape, versus per cent who see their firms in bad shape. 9 Alberta April Alberta's small business optimism dropped a notch in April. The Business Barometer lost 1.6 points to reach 4.7 still in the bottom three, together with NL and SK. Staffing intentions are very weak, with about per cent of respondents looking to reduce staffing while per cent are planning to hire. The state of business health indicator has also weakened somewhat: now, per cent of entrepreneurs see their firms in good shape compared to per cent who see their firms in bad shape.
