13 Angra II Started its Commercial Operation INSTITUTIONAL INFORMATION 11 Started on July,2000 the commercial operation of the thermal nuclear unit Angra II with a installed nameplate capacity of 1,309 MW. This unit located in the southeast region, in the city of Angra dos Reis, on the south shore of the State of Rio de Janeiro, one of the biggest consumer center of electric energy of the country. Angra II represents about 5% of the total installed capacity of Eletrobrás that totaled 65,975 MW, as shown below. 70,000 60,000 50,000 40,000 Others 32,387 MW Generation = 95% hydro Eletrobrás 27,288 MW Itaipu 6,300 MW 30,000 20,000 10, Jul/00 Considering 50% of Itaipu The initial generation process of a thermal nuclear unit requires a gradual growing of production, due to the necessary safety tests. In Brazil, the National Nuclear Energy Commission (Comissão Nacional de Energia Nuclear CNEN), makes these tests. At August 21, 2000, 80% the Angra II unit obtained the generation capacity of 1,065 MW, representing 80% of the total nominal power. At this level it usually takes about 18 days to conclude the tests. Angra dos Reis thermal nuclear generation center is made up of two units: Angra I with 657 MW of installed nameplate capacity and Angra II with 1,309 MW of installed nameplate capacity. At the moment this generation center is producing 1,627 MW, and up to the end of the year it will be producing 100% of its total capacity. The construction an operation of the thermal nuclear units in Brazil is a responsibility of Eletrobrás Termonuclear S.A. Eletronuclear, a subsidiary company, where Eletrobrás has 99,7% of its capital and owner of Angra I and Angra II.
