1 University of Nevada, Las Vegas Department of Intercollegiate Athletics Self-Supporting Revenue Summary and Projections Self-supporting revenue for the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) Athletics Department consists of three primary areas: charitable contributions, conference and NCAA revenues (directly impacted by conference affiliation), and ticket sales. The following information is designed to provide a historical perspective as well as a forecast for charitable contributions. Attached at the end of this presentation, is FY 2012 data through December 31, 2011 and five previous fiscal years. 1. Sport Interest Groups: Sport interest groups are gifts that can be designated by a donor to a particular sport. We budgeted to generate $500,000 in FY2012 and are confident that these levels can be maintained in the coming years. FY 2009 was significantly higher than most years because both Men s and Women s basketball raised funds for a summer international trip. We believe this is an area with the potential to grow substantially. In order for this to occur, an emphasis will have to be placed on the annual giving program. There are two affiliate foundations that contribute directly to Sports. As of June 30, 2011 The Rebel Golf Foundation and the Football Foundation had net assets of $4,121,540 and $814,000 respectively. 2. Priority Seating Donations: Priority seating donations are associated with football or men s basketball season tickets. UNLV men s basketball program is currently the driving force behind these donations. Over the past several years priority donations have been about $3,200,000. We are budgeting for an additional $500,000 in priority contributions in fiscal year We are confident that those numbers can be maintained for the next three to five years with modest growth. At that time period another substantial increment could occur. Additionally, these revenues could dramatically increase if the on-campus football stadium plans materialize. 3. Unrestricted Donations: The general scholarship fund grew by approximately 1000% in fiscal year We are confident that these levels will not only be maintained, but will grow by at least $250,000 annually. We are budgeted to generate $900,000 in fiscal year By comparison, this fund generated about $65,000 in fiscal year 2010 and about $50,000 in fiscal year Benefits: Benefits are the goods and services provided to donors at specific donation levels. Benefits are not tax deductible and are reported separately from the donation. They include, but are not limited to, the following; athletic merchandise and hosting expenditures. 5. Endowments Earnings: Endowments earnings are generated by the investment portfolio. Some of the earnings go back into the corpus of the endowment. The earnings in represented in the above chart mainly go towards athletic scholarships. 6. Trade: (BUSINESS & FINANCE COMMITTEE 03/01/12) Ref. BF-8, Page 1 of 10

2 Athletics uses inventory that has gone unsold to procure goods and services. In most cases, a two for one value is pursued. Therefore; a large portion of the trade is considered a donation. Trade has stayed consistent with the exception of FY 2010 which was a transition year in athletic administration. Athletics also receives pledges and donations for facility Improvements and endowments. Provided below is a summary of those areas. 1. Pledges Pledges are donor commitments to contribute in future years. We are confident that the majority of these pledges will become donations. We currently have $14,860,709 in pledges. It includes $11,300,000 pledge for the recently completed Mendenhall Center. 2. Facility Donations: The athletic department has improved several facilities over the last several years with the help of their donors. The most recent was for the Mendenhall Center Facility. In February of 2012, the Mendenhall Center facility will be deeded over to UNLV through the UNLV Foundation. Eleven million and three hundred thousand dollars in gifts were donated for the construction of the Mendenhall Center. Additionally, $625,000 in pledges has been secured. 3. Endowments: As of December of 2011 the corpus of the UNLV Athletics endowment was $6,613, and had a fair market value of $7,743, There have not been any significant endowment contributions to athletics department in the past several years. This is attributed to the department s need to raise funds to meet annual operational and facility needs. Because of the continued need to generate philanthropic dollars for operational and facility needs, fundraising efforts will remain focused in those areas. Provided below is a list of the current athletic endowments. Closing Statement: There was a change in administration during fiscal year There was a significant decline in fundraising during this period. Under the direction of Director of Athletics, Jim Livengood, there was a 17% growth in philanthropic dollars raised by the Rebel Athletic Fund (RAF) in fiscal year An additional 15% growth is projected for fiscal year Most of the growth has come in the area of unrestricted donations. There has been a concerted effort in this area particularly with the Loyalty Circle Program. This program consists of five-year $50,000 commitments in support of student-athlete scholarships. To date, 50 such commitments have been secured. These 50 commitments generate $500,000 of annual revenue and represent $2,500,000 in pledges. The goal is to secure at least 25 new commitments annually. This department will continue to be a great steward of both public and private resources. Additionally, we will continue to be creative, and when necessary, aggressive in generating new revenue streams. It is clear, at least for the foreseeable future, that the Athletic Department will need to continue to rely on University and State support to maintain its current programming levels. We believe that there is a direct correlation between resources at hand and competitive success. With that said, we also believe that the Golden Years for Rebel Athletics are directly ahead of us.
