5 HEALTH & SAFETY General Safety Tips Noise & Hearing Protection Excessive noise emitted from plant processes and tools can cause over a period of time, progressive and irreversible loss of hearing. It can cause a ringing or rushing noise in the ears which will not disappear. If you work in areas where you need to shout to be heard, then you require hearing protection. This can either be ear plugs or ear muffs. These give good protection if some simple rules are observed. Wear ear protectors at all times if exposed to a noise hazard. Do not use cotton for ear protection; it is not effective Make sure ear plugs are a good fit and properly inserted. Only use disposable ear plugs once. Hearing protection must be worn in all areas where hearing protection warning signs are displayed. If you work with compressed air tools ensure that: Mufflers are fitted, where possible, to the tool Air lines do not leak; this can cause unnecessary noise Compressor access covers are kept shut Hand/Arm Vibration (HAV) Hand arm vibration syndrome is also known as white finger disease. It is caused from vibration from tools such as breakers, angle grinders, chainsaws and even equipment which you walk behind, such as a plate compactor. The vibration is transmitted straight into your hand and arms through the handles. To avoid this the following should be done- Wear gloves Keep warm Take short breaks and exercise your hands and fingers. We supply a range of hearing and hand protection to suit the user s preference.

6 HEALTH & SAFETY Safety at Heights When working on towers follow these safety tips: System Scaffold Towers System scaffold towers must be constructed to the same standard as any other scaffolding. Inspect the tower before use. If you are erecting a system scaffold tower, you must be trained to do so. Working platforms must be fully boarded out. Where the risk assessment requires it they must be provided with guard-rails and toe boards The towers must be braced. Mobile Towers Mobile towers must not be used unless wheels with brakes are provided. The brakes must be applied before the tower is used and the wheels must be firmly fixed to the towers. Mobile towers should be erected so that the height of the platform above the ground is no more than three times the smaller base dimension. If the tower is used indoors, the platform may be 3.5 times the smaller base dimension above the ground. The access to the tower must be suitable, e.g. Ladders must be securely fixed. The tower must not be moved whilst persons or materials are still on the tower. Towers should be erected and dismantled in a careful and orderly manner in order to prevent damage to the component parts, e.g. do not use lump hammers to hammer braces into position. If a tower appears to be unsafe, do not use it and if appropriate, report it to your supervisor. Our access towers are a high quality access tower which are designed, engineered and tested in accordance with the latest standards. You must erect and dismantle mobile access towers in accordance with the manufacturers guide. This guide will be supplied when hiring from McMahons Plant & Tool Hire. NEVER USE LADDERS / STEPS / CRATES TO GAIN EXTRA HEIGHTS.

7 HEALTH & SAFETY Power Tools The efficient and safe use of all power tools can come only through proper training, proper maintenance and from adequate supervision on site. Too many accidents occur due to untrained, unskilled labour. No one should use a power tool unless they have been given instruction on it. Tools which have exposed cutters should be switched off and held until they have stopped moving before set down. Operators should not wear any items of loose clothing which could become caught in moving parts of power tools The air lines to air driven tools can be lethal if they break free and whip never use jubilee clips which have caused many serious accidents. Check all lines before use. If machines are designed to be used with guards, never start the machines unless the guards are firmly in place. Dust Cutting paving slabs, kerb stones or other concrete or stone products produces enormous amounts of dust. This dust will contain some very fine particles called Respirable Crystalline Silica (RCS). Exposure to RCS dust can cause serious health problems which may eventually prove to be fatal. To prevent this - Use wet methods i.e. Portable pressurised bottle systems on cut off saws Wear breathing masks. Health & Safety Equipment We keep in stock a full range of site safety and personal protective equipment.
