8 Definition of Health Literacy Health literacy is the degree to which individuals can obtain, process, and understand the basic health information and services they need to make appropriate health decisions and follow instructions for treatment. IOM s program side (where the roundtables, forums, and consensus studies are located and staffed) has retained its name for at least 1 year as one of six program divisions of what are now known as The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.
