3 Type of course: exercise class Term: winter/summer Grading: essay and presentation Contents: Current Issues in Insurance Management The seminar focuses on current issues in insurance management. The topics vary from theoretical and methodological problems of insurance business administration to current management practices. Controlling in Insurance Companies I Term: winter Contents: Controlling in Insurance Companies I The lecture deals with basic planning and control problems of insurance companies. Decisions concerning product and market strategies are debated. Asset Management of German Private Insurance Companies Contents: Asset Management of German Private Insurance Companies The lecture shows the legal framework for German insurance companies. In addition, some practical issues of investment management will be discussed. Risk Management in Life/ Health Insurance Length: 2 hours / week ECTS-Credits
4 Contents: Risk Management in Life/ Health Insurance The focus of the lecture is on risk management in personal insurance (life, health, pension) branches. Topics are premiums and reserves, profit distribution, solvency and profit directed management. Risk Management in Private Old-Age Provision Contents: Risk Management in Private Old-Age Provision The lecture deals with the analysis and evaluation of alternative products for old-age provision, especially insurance products and investment funds. Central to the analysis are aspects of risk and performance. Controlling in Insurance Companies II Contents: Controlling in Insurance Companies II Continuing lecture I, organizational and operational problems of insurance companies are discussed. Accounting for Insurance Companies Contents: Accounting for Insurance Companies The lecture starts with an idea of different accounting philosophies in the international context (e.g. US GAAP, IAS). Then, the special German accounting principles for insurance
5 companies are discussed. Finally, several issues of an insurance-related and risk theoretical based management accounting system are demonstrated. Thesis: In order to qualify for a thesis in the field of Insurance Business Administration, successful participation in a seminar is required. The thesis must be completed within four months. 8 2.2.1 Course description Finance (Finanzierung) I & II Term: winter Length: 4 hours/week (only in conjunction with case studies) (120 min.) with examination: 14 (5+5+4) Contents (Finance I): Stock Markets and Risk Management This lecture provides a survey of the most prominent stock evaluation methods, portfolio theory, risk diversification, as well as the calculation of risk-adjusted yields which are used to evaluate risky projects and stock investments. Contents (Finance II): Bond Markets and Fixed-Income Products This lecture surveys the most important national and international bond markets. We will also discuss the most important practical methods of calculating yields of bonds with or without special rights, as well as the derivation of the term structure of interest rates. Further topics include bond risk analysis, the calculation of implicit forward rates, and the evaluation and usage of futures and swaps. In addition, students will learn something about methodological problems concerning empirical studies in this field. Finally, several aspects of the (institutional) design of stock exchanges will be discussed. 10 Contents: Banking I & II First, this lecture includes the theoretical foundations of all topics relevant to (commercial) banks. Secondly, institutional conditions including legal foundations and regulations are discussed for banks in Germany. This discussion is complemented by a survey of the organization and legal foundations of banks in other countries. Third, important methodological tools for the management of banks will be presented. Case Studies Bankbetriebslehre I & II Type of course: case studies Length: 1.5 hours/week (only in conjunction with the lecture Banking I & II) ( lecture) ( lecture) Contents: Case Studies Bankbetriebslehre I & II Problem-solving and case studies dealing with topics from the lecture Bankbetriebslehre I & II. Finance (Finanzierung) III (in English) (only in conjunction with case studies) (60 min.) with examination: 7.5 (5+2.5) Contents: Derivate Financial Products The lecture surveys the basic relationships between option values, the valuation of forward and futures contracts, the valuation of options in the binomial and in the Black/Scholes frameworks, as well as the management of positions in options. 11 Length: 1 hour/week ( lecture) Contents: Case Studies Finanzierung III Problem-solving and case studies dealing with topics from the lecture Finanzierung III Additional Modules (Seminar and Thesis) Students who want to write a master s thesis in either banking or finance (see below) have to participate successfully in one of the two seminars which are usually available in each term. To participate in a seminar, students must register at the end of the preceding semester. The assignment to a specific topic is based on personal priorities and on the grade a student has received for his/her participation in a case study course or an equivalent course. The seminars requirements are a short thesis, active participation in the discussion and a written exam. For more and detailed information contact one of the assistants Examination Grading (lectures): You can receive a grade only if you participate in both the relevant lecture and the associated case studies. The grade is determined based on your performance in the written exam at the end of a term. ECTS Credits: either 7.5 or 14 depending on the lecture Diploma Thesis (Diplomarbeit): Topics for a thesis are available from both chairs twice a year (end of April and end of October). There exists a common procedure for the assignment of topics in the fields of both banking and finance which will be explained each mid-april and mid-october: The order of the assignment is determined based on your priorities and your grade in a seminar. 11
