23 SMART WAYS TO SAVE MONEY Here are two easy ways you can save money on healthcare expenses: In-network vs. out-of-network: Before you visit a doctor, dentist, provider, or facility, make sure that the person or facility is in-network, meaning he or she (or it) is part of your health plan. If you see an out-of-network provider, your costs will be higher. You can check on this by calling the provider s office, or by looking online. Usually, it s safest to call. Generic medications: Make sure that when you visit the pharmacy or call mail-order for your (or your family s prescriptions), you ask for the generic equivalent of the medication. Sometimes, however, generic will not be available. 23
