1 Course Syllabus Course Develops the concept of insurable risk and its identification; the uses of Description insurance in financial planning to deal with risk; analysis of property, liability, life, medical and disability insurance policies; annuities; employee benefit plans; business applications of life and disability insurance. Meets 3 of the 18 units of course work that satisfy the educational requirements to sit for the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) exam. Course Objectives By the end of this course, you will be able to do the following: 1. Identify and explain the concept of insurable risk and the methods of avoiding, reducing or eliminating risk including the use of insurance. 2. Explain the legal and regulatory aspects of insurance. 3. Provide an overview of the taxation of annuities in life, medical and disability insurance. 4. Explain the use of employee benefits programs and business applications of individual life and disability insurance. 5. Intepret the criteria that may be used to evaluate and select insurance companies and agencies. 6. Explain the role of insurance in the overall financial planning process. Prerequisites Finance 100 or its equivalent or permission of the instructor. For more information, go to Instructor Mr. Howard is an experienced insurance and risk management Bio executive. Prior to 1994, he spent over 20 years as Vice President of Risk Management and Insurance for First Interstate Bancorp, a $55.9 billion multistate bank holding company. His responsibilities included: Service as President of First Interstate's captive insurance company, Western Bonding and Casualty Company and President of First Interstate Life Insurance Company. In addition, he headed
5 the actuarial team leading to the formation of Bankers Insurance Company Ltd., a banking industry owned captive insurance company. Mr. Howard had seven years experience as the owner of an independent life and property casualty brokerage firm and was licensed to transact life and disability insurance. He also served as an underwriter for the Commercial Union and Reliance Groups. INSTRUCTION: Mr. Howard has been a guest lecturer for Risk Management classes at California State University, Northridge. He also taught classes in economics, risk management and insurance company operations for over 21 semesters for the Extension Division of the University of California and was designated Senior Instructor. Prior to teaching at UCLA he taught 14 semesters of general insurance classes at Golden Gate University in San Francisco PUBLICATIONS: Mr. Howard co-authored the Tools & Tecniques of Risk Management & Insurance published by The National Underwriter Company in EDUCATION: Bachelors Degree- San Francisco State University Masters of Science - Finance, California State University, Los Angeles PROFESSIONAL SOCIETIES: Associate in the Insurance Institute of America Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter Member of the Risk and Insurance Management Society, the Society of Property and Casualty Underwriters, and the American Risk and Insurance Association for over 25 years.
