7 Flood Risk Products Background on Flood Risk Products FEMA is developing various products as part of the Risk Mapping Analysis and Planning (Risk MAP) Initiative These products are intended to help communities better understand and communicate flood risk GIS data such as parcels and building footprints are requested from the communities to be included in these products Population Data is used from 2010 US Census

23 Engagement Community Engagement FEMA s Risk MAP community engagement approach is guided by the following principles: Engage communities early and often Agree upon and document project outcomes and responsibilities Coordinate with other programs operating within the same community Engage associations to provide a third-party perspective Leverage local media and use language that people understand

24 Engagement Community Engagement Engage communities early and often Let community understand what is being done in their study area Get them involved in the planning process Let community become comfortable with the project progress. Early engagement will help all stakeholders communicate with each other early and often

25 Engagement Community Engagement Agree upon and document project outcomes and responsibilities Turnover of community officials is often detrimental to the long-term FEMA projects Risk MAP program works with the communities to create a Project Charter This sets a clear understanding among the communities of the FEMA project objectives and the flood risk products they will receive

26 Engagement Community Engagement Coordinate with other programs operating within the same community Risk MAP projects do not happen in a vacuum Risk MAP program calls for active stakeholders participation in the initial phase of the projects called Discovery This collaboration will achieve a high level of communication with all stakeholders working in a same community This will also indentify the ways to work together

27 Engagement Community Engagement Engage associations to provide a third-party perspective Identify local and regional chapters of the key associations (floodplain mapping, Watershed, ASCE etc.) Proactively engage members of the local chapters within a community of a watershed being studied under the Risk MAP program Bringing them together will further enhance the collaborative approach which will ultimately benefit the community to better serve the Risk MAP vision

28 Engagement Community Engagement Leverage local media and use language that people understand Risk MAP vision calls for proactive media outreach Local media provides a vital support in communicating with the local citizens Risk MAP program has developed several media kits and customizable advertisements to help communicate with the local citizens An outreach in plain language and to the targeted audience is always effective in communicating the risk to the communities
