1 GLOSSARY 401k, p. 439 A retirement savings plan that is sponsored and set up by an employer for its employees; like other retirement plans, there are strict rules as to when the money can be withdrawn without a penalty and strict contribution limits which change from year to year. 403b, p. 439 A tax-deferred retirement savings program for employees of educational institutions and some non profit organizations. 52-week high, p. 10 The highest price at which one share was traded over the last year. 52-week low, p. 10 The lowest price at which one share was traded over the last year. 2 B back-end ratio, p. 406 A factor that banks use when deciding whether to lend money for a mortgage that takes into account a borrower s regular monthly debts, such as car loans, alimony, child support, and credit card bills, to gross monthly income. balancing, p. 123 The process of verifying the bank s records to make sure no errors have been made. balloon mortgage, p. 407 A mortgage with a very large last payment, with all other payments being relatively low. balloon payment, p. 182 The last monthly payment on some loans that is much greater than the previous payments. bank statement, p. 123 A statement that includes all transactions that have occurred for a period of approximately one month. bar graph, p. 497 A type of graph or data display that uses rectangular bars to compare categories of data. base period, p. 311 A fixed period of time that most states use in an unemployment insurance formula to determine weekly benefits. beneficiary, p. 457 A person chosen by the policyholder whose name is on the life insurance policy and who receives the benefits of the policy after the policyholder s death. benefits, p. 291 Additional compensation from an employer; benefits can include health and dental insurance, child care, retirement, and travel expenses. billing cycle, p. 200 A predetermined amount of time set by the credit card company that is used for calculating a credit card bill. billing date, pp. 201, 207 The date that a credit card statement was written. bimodal, p. 228 A set of data that has two modes. bivariate data, p. 64 Data given as pairs of numbers and show a relationship between the pairs. biweekly, pp. 156, 296 Every two weeks. board of directors, p. 423 A group of people who are elected by the condominium or landominium homeowners to manage business matters. bodily injury (BI) liability, p. 238 Covers bodily injury if a driver is at fault in an accident. box-and-whisker plot, p. 234 Also called a boxplot; a type of graph that shows all four quartiles and the least number; it is drawn to scale. boxplot, p. 234 Also called a boxand-whisker plot; a type of graph that shows all four quartiles and the least number; it should be drawn to scale. braking distance, p. 268 The distance a car travels while braking to a complete stop. braking efficiency, p. 275 A number determined by an examination of the rear and front wheel brakes; it can run from 0% efficiency (no brakes at all) to 100% efficiency (brakes are in excellent condition); the braking efficiency number is expressed as a decimal when used in the skid speed formula. breakeven point, p. 80 When the expenses and the revenue are equal, so that there is no profit or loss. C cafeteria plan, p. 347 A portion of pre-tax wages set aside for the payment of certain medical, childcare, parental care, and nonreimbursed medical insurance expenses. canceled, p. 117 A check that has been processed so that the money is paid to the payee of a check. candlestick chart, p. 19 A chart, like a stock chart, but with a top line that indicates the high price, and a low line that indicates the low price for a given period; the rectangular region, known as the real body, is displayed in two different colors; the green candlestick indicates that the closing price is greater than the opening price and the red candlestick indicates the closing price is less than the opening price. capital, p. 4 Money that is used to start or expand a business. car-rental insurance, p. 239 A type of insurance that pays for part of the cost of a rented car if a car is disabled because of a collision or comprehensive-covered repair. cash flow, p. 508 The money that goes in and out of a budget within a fixed period of time. cash flow analysis, p. 499 A detailing of how money comes in and how money goes out over a fixed period of time. cash value, p. 465 The value of the investment portion of a whole life insurance policy. causal relationship, p. 64 When one variable causes a change in another variable. ccf, p. 482 A unit of measure that represents 100 cubic feet. cell, p. 12 The intersection of a column and row in a spreadsheet where data is entered. central angle, p. 499 The angle formed around the center of a pie chart by the radii that make the sectors. certificate of deposit (CD), p. 132 A certificate that states there is a specific sum of money on deposit and guarantees the payment of a fixed interest rate after a certain period of time, usually seven days to ten years; deposits and withdrawals cannot be made with a CD. charge card, p. 194 A special type of credit card where the monthly bills for all purchases must be paid in full and there is no interest charged. check, p. 116 A written order used to tell a bank to pay money (transfer funds) from an account to the check holder. 540 Glossary

3 check clearing, p. 116 The process that happens when a bank pays for a check out of a checking account; a check is cleared when the bank has transferred the funds from the checking account. check register, p. 119 A record of all transactions in a checking account, including checks written, deposits made, fees paid, ATM withdrawals, and so on. checking account, p. 116 An account at a bank that allows a customer to deposit money and make withdrawals from the funds on deposit using a paper check or electronic transfer. childcare leave, p. 310 An employee benefit that allows employees paid time off to care for sick children or newborns. chord, p. 277 A line segment that connects two points on a circle. claim, p. 238 A request for payment by a driver involved in an accident to an insurance company that provides automobile insurance for the driver. close, p. 9 Also called closing price; The last price at which a stock was traded on a regular trading day. closing, p. 411 A meeting attended by a buyer, seller, attorneys, and a representative of a lending institution for the official sale of a property. closing costs, p. 411 Costs that are paid at closing that include origination fees, attorney fees, points, prepaid interest, transfer tax, and title insurance. collateral, p. 182 Security, such as a personal belonging, car or boat title, CD, or stock certificates, that insures a loan will be repaid. collision insurance, p. 239 A type of insurance that pays for the repair or replacement of an insured car if it is damaged in a collision with another vehicle or object, or if it overturns, no matter who is at fault. This type of insurance is usually required if there is a loan on the car. column, p. 496 A vertical line of values in a matrix or spreadsheet. commission (as compensation), p. 303 A method of payment where an employee receives a percentage of the amount of sales produced by that employee. commission (of stock trades), p. 40 A percentage of the value of a stock trade. compound interest, p. 137 Interest that is earned on the money deposited into an account plus previous interest. common stock, p. 51 A type of stock where the stockholders receive dividends only when the board of directors elects to issue dividends. compound interest formula, p. 143 Formula that can be used to calculate compound interest; B = p (1 + r n ) nt where B is the ending balance, p is the principal or original balance, r is the interest rate, n is the number of times that interest is compounded annually, and t is the number of years. comprehensive insurance, p. 239 A type of insurance that covers the repair or replacement of parts of an insured car damaged by vandalism, fire, flood, wind, earthquakes, missiles, falling objects, riots, tree sprays, and other disasters; it also covers if the car is stolen. condominium, p. 422 A form of home ownership where each unit is individually owned. congruent, p. 396 Figures that have the same shape and size. Consumer Price Index (CPI), p. 457 An indicator of inflation that measures the change in the total cost of a specific list of services and products. continuous compound interest formula, p. 150 A formula for calculating continuous compound interest; B = pe rt, where B is the ending balance, p is the principal, e is the exponential base, r is the interest rate, and t is the number of years the principal earns interest. continuous compounding, p. 150 A method of calculating interest so that it is compounded an infinite number of times each year rather than being compounded every minute, or every microsecond. co-op apartment, p. 423 A form of home ownership where an investor purchases shares of a cooperative and then is able to live in the apartment. cooperative, p. 423 A form of home ownership where a corporation owns a group of apartments and takes out a mortgage to buy the entire apartment complex; investors purchase shares which allow them to occupy the apartments; co-op owners do not own their individual apartment; instead they own a portion of the entire cooperative development. corporate bond, p. 54 A loan to a corporation; the corporation agrees to pay the bondholder back with interest, much like a bank pays a customer with money on deposit. corporation, p. 4 A business organization that is owned by one person or group of people, in which the owner has limited liability in the business, and therefore, is not personally liable. correlation, p. 64 An association between two variables. correlation coefficient, p. 70 Represented by r, it is a number between 1 and 1, inclusive, that is used to judge how closely a line fits the data. cosigner, p. 181 A person that signs a promissory note along with the borrower and agrees to pay back the loan if the borrower does not. cost of living adjustment (COLA), p. 457 A small increase in a retiree s benefits based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI) or cost of living index. credit (banking), p. 119 Deposits into a bank account. credit (purchases), p. 174 When something is bought that is not paid for at the time of purchase. credit calendar, p. 206 A calendar method of finding the average daily balance of a credit card. credit card, p. 193 A type of credit card account that has a revolving charge where the entire bill does not have to be paid in full each month. credit card statement, p. 200 An accounting of the credits and debits in the form of a monthly report sent to a credit card holder. credit line, p. 201 The maximum amount that a person can owe on a credit card at one time. credit rating, p. 174 A credit report card that shows how well a user of credit meets financial obligations; these records are used by creditors when they decide to issue credit. credit reporting agency, p. 175 Organizations that compile records on users of credit as to how well they repay their debts. crediting, p. 137 Interest that is compounded daily, but is paid either quarterly or semiannually. 4 creditor, p. 174 Organization or person who extends credit to debtors. crossover, p. 26 Occurs when one time interval moving average graph crosses over another moving average; this is a possible signal that a stock trend reversal might be near. cubic foot, p. 482 A unit of measure by which natural gas and water are sold; it represents the amount of space occupied, not the weight. cubic function, p. 190 A function or equation raised to an exponent of three. cubic regression equation, p. 190 A third-degree regression equation of the form y = ax 3 + bx 2 + cx + d that can be used to determine the loan balance throughout the life of a loan. currency exchange rate, p. 264 A rate used to convert one country s currency to another country s currency. cusp, p. 221 On a graph, where two lines of a piecewise function meet. Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA), p. 316 The federal act that established Social Security insurance. fee paid, p. 291 When the employer, instead of the employee, pays the fee to an employment agency.
