2 CEO REPORT Annual Report 2013 I am extremely pleased to present this annual report as Chief Executive Officer of Asbestoswise. This year has been a good one for the organisation, consolidating the excellent work undertaken by previous staff and the Committee of Management in overseeing a successful merger between the Asbestos Diseases Society of Victoria and the Asbestos Information and Support Service in early Over the past year the organisation has experienced a complete turnover of staff. During this time it has been of critical importance that the Committee of Management remain stable and engaged, and I compliment the Committee members on their efforts and steady hands. Josh Fergeus - CEO As a result of the hard work of our staff and volunteers our information service has continued to grow. We managed approximately 500 cases generated via the Hotline or the Asbestoswise website during the financial year. In addition, over 45,000 people visited the Asbestoswise website on 54,000 occasions, viewing over 112,000 pages of information. While we are based in Victoria, our service is used by people from right across Australia, with 24% of people accessing our information and advice services coming from New South Wales, 12% from Queensland, 7% from Perth, 5% from South Australia, and 1% from Tasmania. We are pleased to continue to partner with fellow organisations working towards similar goals in other jurisdictions, and regularly refer people to support groups from around the country. I would like to thank our primary funding partners from the financial year Maurice Blackburn Lawyers and Slater and Gordon. Without their support we would be unable to offer support services to many people living with an asbestos related disease, their friends and families. The year promises to be an ever better one, with both firms continuing their relationship with us, and new funding partners coming on board to enhance our activities. We also hope to work with the Federal Government to build on the establishment of the Asbestos Safety and Eradication Agency, which was a key achievement of the former Labor Government. It is our hope that the Coalition Government will continue to uphold their commitment to work towards the eradication of asbestos in Australia. 1
3 About Us Over the financial year, Asbestoswise has continued to provide information and advice to people across Australia. Our website is now regularly receiving over 7,000 hits per month, providing valuable information on asbestos safety and removal. Our hotline remains busy, with staff helping members of the public through advice, support and referral to removalists, hygienists, and lawyers each and every day. Asbestoswise staff and Committee Members remain committed to raising awareness and educating the public about the dangers of asbestos through information sessions, public speaking engagements, and regular appearances at home renovation expos. Support Program Our support group coordinator Shirley Bare has had a busy year, and has done a great job supporting members. Her commitment was reflected in the responses to a recent survey of the Asbestos-Related Diseases support group. We have had a number of new members join the groups this year, and hopefully will be able to reach out to more people seeking peer support over the next twelve months. Committee of Management President Vice-President Secretary Treasurer David Clement Lawrie O Shea Shirley Bare Lawrie O Shea General Committee Members Staff Chief Executive Officer Josh Fergeus Shelley Matthews Elisa Scarica Wayne Bruton Jacqueline Murphy Peer To Peer Support Program Manager Renee Webb Office Manager Kate Cullity Annual report design by Oscar Schiesser Renee Webb, our new Peer Support Program Manager, will be driving these efforts, with a particular focus on increasing our capacity to provide one-to-one support. Most members recently agreed that attending the group has improved their ability to manage their own health, improved their confidence in dealing with health professionals, increased their knowledge of their disease, improved their feelings about their health situation and helped them to recognise that there are other people in their situation. However, many people do not access these groups due to illness, frailty, or personal preference. With Renee on board we are working towards making support services available as widely as possible through increased use of phone support and by developing our capacity to run support groups in regional Victoria. 2

11 NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30 JUNE 2013 Note 1. Statement of Significant Accounting Policies This financial report includes the financial statements and notes of the Asbestos Wise Inc., a incorporated association, which is incorporated in Victoria under the Associations Incorporation Reform Act Policies Basis of preparation This financial report is a special purpose financial report prepared in order to satisfy the financial reporting requirements of the Associations Incorporation Reform Act (Victoria 2012). The committee has determined that the association is not a reporting entity. The financial report has been prepared on a cash accounting basis and is based on historical costs, modified, where applicable, by the measurement at fair value of selected non-current assets, financial assets and financial liabilities. The cash accounting basis means that all transactions are accounted for when cash inflows/outflows occur. The following is a summary of the material accounting policies adopted by the company in the preparation of the general purpose financial report. The accounting policies have been consistently applied, unless otherwise stated. Accounting Policies a. Cash and Cash Equivalents Cash and cash equivalents include cash on hand, deposits held at-call with banks, other short-term highly liquid investments with original maturities of three months or less, and bank overdrafts. Bank overdrafts are shown within borrowings in current liabilities on the balance sheet. b. Revenue Revenue is measured at the fair value of the consideration received or receivable. Revenue from the sale of goods is recognised at the point of delivery as this corresponds to the transfer of significant risks and rewards of ownership of the goods and the cessation of all involvement in those goods. Interest revenue is recognised when the interest income is received. Revenue from the rendering of a service is recognised upon the delivery of the service to the customers. All revenue is stated net of the amount of goods and services tax (GST). c. Comparative Figures No comparative figures have been provided as the current financial year is the Association's first year of trading. d. Income Tax By virtue of its aims as set out in the constitution, the Association qualifies as an organisation specifically exempt from income tax under section 23 (e) of the Income Tax Assessment Act. e. Goods and Services Tax (GST) Revenues, expenses and assets are recognised net of the amount of GST, except where the amount of GST incurred is not recoverable from the Australian Taxation Office. In these circumstances the GST is recognised as part of the cost of acquisition of the asset or as part of an item of expense. 10
12 NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30 JUNE 2013 f. Property, Plant and Equipment Each class of property, plant and equipment is carried at cost or fair value less, where applicable, any accumulated depreciation and impairment losses. Property Freehold land and buildings are shown at their fair value based on periodic, but at least triennial, valuations by external independent valuers, less subsequent depreciation for buildings. Increases in the carrying amount arising on revaluation of land and buildings are credited to a revaluation reserve in equity. Decreases that offset previous increases of the same classes of assets are charged against fair value reserves directly in equity; all other decreases are charged to the income statement. Each year the difference between depreciation based on the revalued carrying amount of the asset charged to the income statement and depreciation based on the asset's original cost is transferred from the revaluation reserve to retained earnings. Any accumulated depreciation at the date of revaluation is eliminated against the gross carrying amount of the asset and the net amount is restated to the revalued amount of the asset. Freehold land and buildings that have been contributed at no cost, or for nominal cost are valued at the fair value of the asset at the date it is acquired. Plant and Equipment Plant and Equipment are measured on the cost basis less depreciation and impairment losses. The carrying amount of plant and equipment is reviewed annually by directors to ensure it is not in excess of the recoverable amount from these assets. The recoverable amount is assessed on the basis of the expected net cash flows that will be received from the assets' employment and subsequent disposal. The expected net cash flows have been discounted to their present values in determining recoverable amounts. Subsequent costs are included in the asset's carrying amount or recognised as a separate asset, as appropriate, only when it is probable that future economic benefits associated with the item will flow to the company and the cost of the item can be measured reliably. All other repairs and maintenance are charged to the income statement during the financial period in which they are incurred. Depreciation The depreciable amount of all fixed assets including buildings, is depreciated on a diminishing value basis over their useful lives to the company commencing from the time the asset is held ready for use. The depreciation rates used for each class of depreciable assets are: Class of Fixed Asset Depreciation Rate Plant & equipment 10% to 50% The asset's residual values and useful lives are reviewed and adjusted, if appropriate, at each balance date. An asset's carrying amount is written down immediately to its recoverable amount if the asset's carrying amount is greater than its estimated recoverable amount. Gains and losses on disposals are determined by comparing proceeds with the carrying amount. These gains and losses are included in the income statement. 11
