1 Are You Willing to Work For It? NTCC Work Scholarship Program ~ A Groundbreaking Opportunity available in the summer of 2014 at NTCC s Eagle Ranch NTCC Wants You? NTCC is looking for a select group of students interested in working to pay for their education while also earning some spending money along the way. In addition, you will receive college credit while getting valuable working experiences on the NTCC Eagle Ranch. Summer 2014 will kick-off with a bang for those students selected for the pilot project of the NTCC Work Scholarship Program. What can you get? Students can expect to develop excellent work ethics, best management techniques, interview skills, and experience college life all while working and earning scholarship monies for their future. The NTCC Eagle Ranch is a diversified operation consisting of traditional cow-calf operation, forage and hay production, muscadine vineyard, vegetable garden, greenhouse production, farmer s market, pastured poultry and farmscaping. How to apply? There will be a special orientation and selection of students for this program to be announced by the last week of May. Students interested in this program should contact Mrs. Rene McCracken at or rmccracken@ntcc.edu. Details and final descriptions of the program may be subject to change. Those students interested should provide contact information and will be sent an application deadline to apply is May 1 st. Students will be selected and notified by May 15th to attend an interview and orientation. Who should apply? Any student who wants to go to college and is willing to work for it! Students will be selected based on their completion of an application and interview process. Special consideration will be given to those students who want to pursue a degree in agriculture (however, this is not a condition of application to the program). Students must be able to work 16 hours per week beginning June 9 th and ending August 14 th. Work schedules will vary throughout the week. This is not a needs based program. This program is for students who have a strong work ethic!

2 Volunteer Scholarship Assistance Program (NTCC WORK SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM) WHAT IS THE WORK SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM? The NTCC Work Scholarship Program is a program that allows students the opportunity to volunteer to work at NTCC (or, as the program grows, in the local community) doing meaningful work (preferably in a field related to their major) and earning credit (in the form of a scholarship) towards their future college expenses. The goal is two-fold. One, give every student the opportunity to attend college without acquiring debt. And, two, give the student a hands-on learning experience in a meaningful job allowing them to earn more than just money. Work ethic, time management, interviewing skills and knowledge of other things expected of them in the workplace, are all a part of the student s learning experience in the NTCC Work Scholarship Program. WHEN AND WHERE WILL THIS TAKE PLACE? NTCC is kicking off the Work Scholarship Program with a pilot program taking place this summer (2014) in the Agriculture Department. 12 students will work for ten weeks (June 9 th to August 14 th ) on Eagle Ranch in various areas. Eagle Ranch is a diversified operation consisting of traditional cow-calf operation, forage and hay production, muscadine vineyard, vegetable garden, greenhouse production, farmer s market, pastured poultry and farmscaping. Each student will work an average of 16 hours per week. NTCC Plans on continuing the Work Scholarship Program in the upcoming school year in additional areas of the College. WHO SHOULD APPLY AND HOW? Any current or future NTCC student can apply. However, for the 2014 summer pilot program, students majoring in Agriculture will be given first preference. All Applications should be turned in to Mrs. Rene McCracken, Director of the Agriculture Program at NTCC. You can pick up an application from Mrs. McCracken at the Elizabeth Hoggatt Whatley AG Complex or you can pick one up from Ms. Lori Hunter, Scholarship Coordinator, in the Administration Building. HOW DOES THE PAY STRUCTURE WORK? The student will receive a compensation of $12 per hour. Of this $12, the student will get paid $4 per hour each week and will receive $8 per hour as a credit toward their scholarship for the upcoming year. If a student were to work every possible hour for the whole summer they could earn $1920. ($12 x 16 hours = $192 per week x 10 weeks = $1,920). Of this they would have earned $640 spending money for the summer and $1,280 of scholarship to be divided evenly between the upcoming fall and spring semesters ($640 scholarship for each semester).

4 FREQUENLY ASKED QUESTIONS: Is this Program need-based (do you have to qualify for financial aid to be on the program)? No What if I have a balance on my account before I start the work Scholarship Program? All pay scenarios are based on a beginning balance of zero on the students account. What happens if I start the summer program and then quit? If you quit the summer program you will forfeit any accrued scholarship credits. You will be paid the $4 for every hour you have worked. How am I paid? All students have to sign up for a MyEagle Passport. This is a student ID that also works just like a bank debit card. Students will be paid on a weekly basis. All funds will be placed on the students card and can be spent at any place that any other debit cards can be used. What happens if I have to miss work? This will be handled on a case by case basis. All absences are either excused or unexcused. Your supervisor has the right to dismiss you from the program for any disciplinary reason, including, but not limited to, unexcused absences. Do I have to be 18 to be in the program? No. If you are under 18, your parents or legal guardian will have to sign your Volunteer Scholarship Assistance Program Contract. What if I work and accumulate scholarship credit but do not attend NTCC? If you do not attend NTCC within two years of completing the work program you lose all credits accumulated towards your scholarship. What about insurance? You are responsible for providing your own insurance. Because you are volunteering for this and being paid through a scholarship, you are not a college employee, therefore, you are not covered by the College s insurance. Please read and initial the following: Student must sign up with the NTCC Business Office for a MyEagle Passport (NTCC Student ID) Students can be removed from the program for disciplinary reasons, including lack of attendance Students must provide their own insurance Student understands that if they do not attend College within two years of completing the program they lose any and all credits saved up towards scholarships Student understands how the pay system works (one-third paid direct to student on debit card and twothirds paid as a credit towards a scholarship) Student must read and sign Accident Waiver and Release of Liability Form Student must read and sign Participation and Insurance Waiver Form

5 NORTHEAST TXAS COMMUNITY COLLEGE Volunteer Scholarship Assistance Program (WORK SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM) ACCIDENT WAIVER AND RELEASE OF LIABILITY FORM I HEREBY ASSUME ALL OF THE RISKS OF PARTICIPATING IN ANY/ALL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATED WITH THE WORK SCHOLARHIP PROGRAM AT NORTHEAST TEXAS COMMUNITY COLLEGE, including by way of example and not limitation, any risks that may arise from negligence or carelessness on the part of the persons or entities being released, from dangerous or defective equipment or property owned, maintained, or controlled by them, or because of their possible liability without fault. I certify that I am physically fit, have sufficiently prepared or trained for participation in this activity, and have not been advised to not participate by a qualified medical professional. I certify that there are no health-related reasons or problems which preclude my participation in this activity. I acknowledge that this Accident Waiver and Release of Liability Form will be used by the event holders, sponsors, and organizers of the activity in which I may participate, and that it will govern my actions and responsibilities at said activity.
