2 MISSION STATEMENT: It is the mission of the Santa Clara County Fish and Game Commission to protect, restore and enhance fish and wildlife resources in Santa Clara County. The Commission considers healthy, natural ecosystems the ideal. Where this is not always possible, the Commission seeks to minimize the effect human intervention while still supporting the goals of protection, enhancement, and restoration of fish and wildlife to the fullest extent. Activities of the Commission will be governed by State Fish & Game Code. To accomplish this mission, the Commission will support the following to the best of its abilities: Support the Federal and State agencies regarding the preservation, conservation or enhancement of fish and game resources. Support educational programs related to wildlife resources. Support projects that will enhance or protect fish and wildlife resources. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND: The Fish and Game Commission was established by the Board of Supervisors in accordance with Santa Clara County Ordinance NS , adopted April 18, 1960, last amended by Santa Clara County Ordinance NS on April 27, The duty of the Commission shall be to investigate all requests for the expending of the monies in the County Fish and Game Propagation Fund per State Fish and Game Code Sections and make written recommendations to the Board of Supervisors regarding expenditures. Requests may be initiated by members of the Commission or by any member of the public. Any investigation shall be for the purpose of determining whether the expenditure is in the interest of the propagation and conservation of fish and game within the County. The Commission is composed of five members appointed by the Board of Supervisors. Each member shall be familiar with fish and game problems within the County of Santa Clara. Term for each member shall be four years. 2

The appointed commissioner for each district shall provide the chairperson with a written report on the status of the fish and game resources within their respective district. The Commissioners will review these reports in a public meeting and the chairperson will compile these reports for submission to the Board at the end of each year. The Commission, from time to time, may recommend that the Board address a letter to a state or federal agency requesting funds. 4 PRIOR YEAR ACCOMPLISHMENTS GOAL/OBJECTIVE ACTIVITIES SUPPORTING GOAL STATUS 1. Recommended funding to Swan Productions for the production of a documentary video on California Fish and Game Wardens. Commissioners unanimously recommended and expenditure of $4500 for this project. Approved 2. Recommended funding to The Little Blue Society for an educational program related to wildlife encroachment into residential areas. Commissioners unanimously recommended and expenditure of $4500 for this project. Approved 3. Discovered and corrected a flaw in the budgetary system to remedy the flow of funds into the Fish and Game Preservation Fund on a monthly basis. 4. Recommended that Kyle Kroll, local DFG game warden, be reimbursed for an educational trip to Canada. Lt. Nores of Cal Fish and Game and the Assistant District Attorney s office helped resolved this issue. As a result, over $37,000 has been deposited into the Fish and Game Preservation Fund. Funds now flow into the Preservation fund on a monthly basis. Commission recommended the Board support an expenditure of approximately $1250. Completed Expenditure denied by Board. 5 PROJECT 1. Recommend removal of obstructions on Coyote Creek to facilitate the migration of native steelhead, an endangered species. 2. Define problems related to fish and wildlife resources within each district and advise the Board on courses of action. 3. Recommend expenditures from the Fish and Game Preservation fund to support education, conservation and preservation of wildlife resources within the county. ACTIVITIES Contact NOAA and Cal DF&G for funding to support removal of this obstruction and similar obstructions. Each Commissioner will be responsible to provide a report to the Commission for discussion. The Chairperson will then compile the reports from each district and submit the report to the Board. Projects will be considered based on proposals submitted to the Commission. 5
