2 According to the announcement by World Bank last February, it is estimated that GDP growth rate of the Philippines in 2017 and 2018 will reach 6.9%, and 6.8% in 2019, supported by its stable economy and active infrastructure investment by the government. Philippine economy, the best in Eastern Asia/Pacific region (China, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Mongol), continues to be steadily growing. The country plays the host for ASEAN Summit and its role of chairman country of various international conferences related to ASEAN also gathers attentions. On the other hand, in terms of index of international competitiveness and infrastructure, it ranks lowest among ASEAN and improving infrastructure is the urgent issue. It is greatly expected that roads, airports, ports and electricity will be improved by expanding infrastructure investment which Duterte s presidency has held. Last January, Japanese Prime Minister Abe, on his visit to the Philippines, declared that Japan would offer a support of 1 trillion yen for the next 5 years to the public and the private, mainly for the infrastructure improvement. Business opportunities in infrastructure field will be expanded for Japanese companies. In addition, raising small and medium enterprises and supporting industries promoted by Philippine government is important measures leading to local parts procurement and cost reduction for Japanese manufacturing industry as well and business matching between Japanese and Philippine small and medium enterprises is expected. The Philippines, whose average age is 24.2 years old which is quite young, having a high growth potential of consumer market in the long term, will continue to be an attractive market for Japanese consumer products manufacturing and consumer service industries. Besides, its business process outsourcing industry (call center, engineering etc.) based on rich human resource of English speakers has been growing and incentive programs such as tax incentives offered by Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) and BOI have been strengthened. These points, along with tax reform, emphasize the priority of the Philippines as a strategic basis, a global partner for global market. Considering increasing information needs for the latest trends regarding business and investment between Japan and the Philippines, which is expected to advance more through infrastructure investment promoted by Duterte s presidency, economic reform by raising small and medium enterprises, tax reform to encourage foreign investment and so on, Nikkei Business Publications will hold Philippines-Japan Business Investment Forum on October 17 at Iino Hall, Tokyo. 2
