2 Dear Student Welcome to the Institute of Bankers. We hope that you will find the academic year both interesting and rewarding, and that you will be successful. We advise you to get all the relevant information and booklets available for you from your IOB centre. These documents will provide advice on how to approach your studies and will guide you through your study materials, but it will also give you administrative information. Above all, we would like you to succeed to get as much as possible out of your studies and pass the assignments as well as examinations. Study materials Your study booklet is essentially your lecturer and your guider. Visit the library and consult prescribed textbooks and also visit the banks to collect information about the products, as well as the recommended readings that are indicated in your study booklet to enrich yourself. You are advised to follow the guidelines in the Students Study Guide. Submission of assignments It is very important to complete and submit a clean, clear and well-argued assignment for marking. Make sure that you understand the question before attempting to answer it. Answer all the questions. Every page of the completed assignment must be numbered in the chorological order. You should complete and submit all assignments on or before the given due date. Note: Plagiarism will not be entertained. Note that assignments received after due date will not be accepted and therefore will not be included in the calculation of continuous assessment (CA) marks. The CA mark and the examination mark will determine your final mark for the module. 2
3 Vacation schools Attending group discussions during vacation school is COMPULSORY and you are strongly advised to attend such discussions whenever possible. Please note: Two assignments (Assignment 1 and 2) will be submitted during the first semester. ASSESSMENTS You have to submit TWO assignments. Both contribute equally towards your continuous assessments mark. EXAMINATION To qualify for the examination, you must obtain a CA mark of 40%, which means an average of 40% from your two assignments. All papers are set on your study material and course work. The examination consists of 1 paper of 3 hours. 3
4 ASSIGNMENTS FOR 2018 The assignments for 2018 have been set to reflect what is in the module for your course, and also incorporate some practical scenarios from the local banking industry. The assignments seeks to achieve the following: 1. Assess your progress in the course 2. Provide opportunity to discuss your work and obtain feedback 3. Make amends 4. 5 QUESTIONS: 1. Do a little research on the Namibian banking sector and answer the following questions: [40 Marks] i) List the names of different banks operating in Namibia. Indicate at least 3 type of loan products each of them offers. [20 Marks] ii) If you wish to buy a house or residential property, what type of loan would the bank offer you? [2 Marks] ii) What type of loan would the bank offer an entrepreneur wishing to buy stock for his business? [2 Marks] iii) Assume that the bank approves your loan on condition that you provide the required collateral for your loan. Explain what a collateral is and why it is important for the bank to request for a collateral? [10 Marks] iv) Explain what the term default means? [2 Marks] v) What measures will the bank take against you if you default on your loan? [4 Marks] 2. Identify the type of lending agreement applicable in each of the following scenarios: [20 Marks] i) It is document that governs the relationship between a lender and a borrower. It stipulates provisions relating to exact loan amount granted, the interest rate, settlement date, and the penalties for violating the stipulated terms and conditions. ii) It is a document signed by the lender and borrower detailing the agreed repayment schedule of the loan. iii) It is a legal document that the lender and borrower signs when the lender extends a loan, credit card facility, or line of credit that a borrower can draw down over time. iv) It is a letter issued by a holding company to a lender to suppose the loan application and provide assurance of financial banking or support in case of default. 5
6 v) It is an agreement that stipulates the terms and conditions of a loan plus the responsibilities of each party. 3. Assume you have been hired by a bank as a Real Estate Property Appraiser, what will your job entails? What skill traits should you poses to succeed in your job?
