1 for SCE Federal Credit Union News Winter 2018 Dear Members, Would you be surprised to know that high school students want to learn how to manage money? In a recent poll, 78% of teens surveyed felt instruction in personal finance was the most important education they needed before graduation. Yet, in most U.S. high schools, financial literacy education is minimal if provided at all. SCE FCU and the nonprofit we founded, the Center for Financial Empowerment, are working to fill that gap for hundreds of teens every year. By partnering with high schools, teachers, and youth organizations, we re teaching students money skills they can put into action with their very first paycheck. And SCE FCU members support of the CFE helps make it all possible. In 2017, we facilitated 55 financial workshops and 7 Mad City Money simulation events, reaching a total of 2,613 young adults. We re proud to have made such an impact on our communities! And while these numbers are impressive, the real success stories go far beyond the statistics. Dante L., an 11th grader from Nevada, had this to say after the CFE taught a series of financial topics in his classroom: The most important thing I learned was about saving money from each paycheck. And I have to spend in a smart way, so I can save up money at the same time. I would not have known to do that before. The CFE s Mad City Money program teaches financial skills using experiential learning that can be more effective than typical financial literacy programs. According to Cynthia R., a teen participant from California, I thought I had already learned how to deal with money, but not in this way. This was very different and interactive, it felt very real! I was surprised how easy it was to fall into debt and end up having to pay more. This event helped me understand simple things that can make a huge difference in my financial decisions. On behalf of the Credit Union and the CFE, we thank SCE FCU members for supporting the work we do to provide underserved youth with financial skills for life. Your donations make it possible to provide this important education free of charge to teens that need it most. Together with you, we re helping to break the cycle of generational poverty. Sincerely yours, Dan Rader President/CEO For stories, photos, and testimonials, visit Center4FE.org

2 Three Ways to Cope When Financial Stress Affects You at Work If your work has ever suffered as a result of financial stress at home, you re not alone. According to one survey, 37% of employees reported that personal finance issues had been a distraction while on the job at least once in their careers. So how do you perform at your professional best and successfully navigate financial challenges at the same time? Check out these three tips: Review Your Financial Situation First of all, try to remember that you re in charge of your finances. If an issue related to employment is the cause of your stress, focus on the positive steps you can take to improve your situation. For example, if you re not making enough money, consider looking for a higher-paying job, or find out if you re eligible for a raise at your current company. If neither of these options is realistic, start a side job. Whether it s driving for a ride-share company, or turning a particular skill into a source of part-time income (for example, graphic design), you may have more options than you realize. Prioritize Projects at the Office Often, you can de-stress your life by creating structure. So if you re feeling overwhelmed at work as a result of your finances, make a simple list of projects in order of importance. This is especially useful if you juggle multiple responsibilities and tight deadlines. Creating a list of priorities can put things in perspective and re-focus your efforts on the job. Talk to a Financial Coach If overcoming financial hardship on your own seems impossible, you can always reach out to a Certified Financial Coach. A trained professional can show you how to manage your debt, organize your finances or simply create a budget that works. The newfound financial confidence can reduce stress, and improve productivity at work. Admitting you need help with your finances is hard, but if your work suffers as a result of trying to resolve the problem on your own, consulting a professional may be worth it and your Credit Union can help! We partner with BALANCE to provide our members with financial counseling and education to help achieve financial independence. Whether it s dealing with financial stress, reviewing your credit report, planning for major expenses, or simply improving money management skills, BALANCE can provide guidance every step of the way. Best of all, we pay for this service as a free benefit for SCE FCU members. Call BALANCE at or visit scefcu.balancepro.org for more information. Remember to let them know you re an SCE FCU member, so you ll receive their counseling services at no cost to you. This information was brought to you by the financial fitness counselors at BALANCE. DID YOU KNOW? If you re planning to travel, it s a good idea to set up travel notes on your SCE FCU credit and debit cards. You can do this by calling us or enter them yourself through Online Banking by selecting Secure Forms, then Travel Notice You can hide accounts through Online Banking. While they ll still be viewable through statements, they won t be visible when you log in to online banking making this a nice option for adding funds to your child s account you don t want them to readily see, or even to tuck money out of sight in your own account. From your PC, log in to Online Banking and then select My Settings from the options along the top of the screen. When you scroll to the bottom, you ll see Rename & Hide Your Accounts Spanish language will be available mid-january for Online Banking, allowing you to switch language options right from your desktop

4 What s in Your Home? Member Advantage INSURANCE SERVICES The beginning of the year is a time when many people resolve to take care of organizational jobs that were left undone the previous year. You may thank yourself later if you take the time to create a home inventory. Each year, about 6% of homeowners file an insurance claim. 1 To accurately process your claim, the insurance company needs detailed information on all your losses. In the stressful aftermath of a burglary, fire, hurricane, or other unexpected disaster, it could be difficult if not impossible to accurately recall specifics on all the belongings in your home. Having an inventory may take pressure off you and facilitate the claims process so you can replace your belongings more quickly and efficiently. Keep a List There s no single way to complete a written inventory of your valuable items, but it helps to use an organized method, such as listing everything in one room before moving to another. You might take photographs of each room and individual photos of the most valuable items. Here are some other tips to keep in mind: You may want to list your most valuable items first and gather receipts and/or appraisals to establish their value. If you don t have a receipt or appraisal, you might find a similar item online and print out information, including its price or estimated value For appliances and electronic equipment, detail the brand, model and serial number For more common items, you could list the general type of item and number of each. With clothing, for example, you might list the number of coats, dresses, pants, shirts, shoes, etc., and note any items of special value Take Advantage of Technology With today s digital photography, it requires very little work to take functional photos and/or videos of all your belongings, either individually or by groups or rooms. You might simply walk through your home videotaping and narrating as you go. Don t forget to open the closets and cabinets so the contents are visible. You could also take digital photos of your inventory list, receipts, and other important documents so they can be stored electronically. The Insurance Information Institute offers a free application called Know Your Stuff (knowyourstuff.org) that walks you through the inventory process on a computer or mobile device and allows you to store your information securely online. There are also other applications available; check your insurance company s website. Having a mobile app at your fingertips might help you remember to update your inventory whenever you make a major purchase or change your living situation. A digital record stored in your mobile device or online may enable you to access the information easily, even in the unfortunate event of a fire, flood, or other situation in which you can t enter your home. Otherwise, make sure to keep copies of any physical documentation in a safe place outside of your home or in a safe-deposit box. Make a weekend project of documenting your belongings, and you might sleep easier knowing you re prepared. Your inventory may also help you determine the appropriate amount of insurance coverage to purchase and verify any future losses for tax purposes.
