1 PowerPoint is most often: Static, boring, expected, inhuman. You are most often: Dynamic, enthusiastic, unexpected, human. You are the medium. PowerPoint is the backdrop.
2 There are 300 million PowerPoint users in the world. They do 30 million presentations each day. About a million presentations are going on right now.
3 50% of them are unbearable 23% of them are tragically flawed 11% of them are simply misguided 8% of them elevate annoyance to an art form 6% of them are psychologically damaging 2% of them actually get it By the end of the day 7.26 billion brain cells will be dead because of this. What s the Problem?
4 PowerPoint can help to: Visualize ideas and stories Create key memorable points Impress and rally 98% of the time it is simply: Prompter for bad speaking Handouts on a screen Data dumps to the unsuspecting Together, we can make the world a better place.
5 First, some PowerPoint no-nos that you already know. People tend to put every word they are going to say on their PowerPoint slides. Although this eliminates the need to memorize your presentation or even know what you are talking about, ultimately this makes your slides crowded, wordy and boring. It is guaranteed that you will lose your audiences attention long before you even reach the bottom of your first slide.
6 Don t look like an idiot! Many people do not run spell cheek before their presentation. This is a BIG MISTACK! Nothing makes you look sillier than spelling errers just sitting there for your audience to stair at. Clashing font colors and background can lead to: Distraction Confusion Headache Nausea Vomiting Shortness of pants Loss of bladder control
7 The font you choose says something about you: Courier (You are organized and structured.) Comic Sans (You think you re funny.) Times New Roman (Lazy, apathetic, unimaginative and you always use the default.) Important fact from University of Chicago perceptual studies research: The number of PowerPoint slides you have in your presentation is inversely proportional to how interesting your presentation will actually be. 14 slides = Whoopee! Very interesting. 87 slides = Please help get me out of this room.
8 OK. Let s get serious. Checklist for Great PowerPoint Presentations Significance Structure Simplicity Rehearsal Consideration #1: Significance
9 Why are you here presenting? To pass along important information? Because someone told you to? To create meaning? What s this all about and why should any of it matter to me? How Presentations Work 1. Significance creates passion 2. Passion attracts attention 3. Attention leads to action
10 Remember your presentation is all about THEM. Consideration #2: Structure Structure is how you lay in place the building blocks of your story.
11 Any structure can work as long as it is: 1. Suitable 2. Memorable 3. Convincing How can you explain a program? Checklists Process to get their organization ready Periodic quizzes (with prizes!) Tell a story (create a character) Take the person through the process Give them 3-4 reasons to believe. (They won t remember any more anyway.)
12 Consideration #3: Simplicity Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler However, being simple is not that simple.
13 Simple Content Rule: Say it in six words (or less) Beware of SAOD (Severe Acronym Overload Disorder) Simple Design Rules One point per slide A few matching colors Very few fonts Photos, not clipart
14 Less text. More imagery. WILD imagery. Consideration #4: Rehearsal It will never, ever work completely the first time. Trust me.
15 Feedback Get some. No Audience? Present to the furniture. But aloud. Try it. You have to try it on. Let s take a look at some MSHDA presentations.
