Haiti struck by a massive 7.0-magnitude earthquake Haiti's worst quake in two centuries hit south of the capital Port-au-Prince on Tuesday, wrecking the presidential palace, UN Headquarters and other buildings. The Red Cross says up to three million people have been affected. The cost of damage is estimated to be in billions. A number of nations, including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, France, Venezuela and a number of Latin American nations, are gearing up to send aid. The Red Cross is sending a relief team from Geneva and two UN planes, carrying emergency food aid to Port-au-Prince. 6 As part of the rebuilding strategy to provide job opportunities for the victims, we will temporarily employ Haitians to clear debris and restore basic infrastructure. The agricultural infrastructure has to be repaired as Co-ordinator of UN Development Programme soon as possible to secure food supply. Haiti depends on food imports, yet around 80% of the population are engaged in agriculture. In the long term, we hope to develop a rural agricultural strategy that would enable Haiti to become more self-sufficient.
