1 Summer 2015 Vol. 9, No. 3 Smart Money Matters Building lifelong relationships with our members to help them achieve their financial goals

2 creating real value for our members Barry Nelson President & CEO Pat Moreno Board Chair Cindy, a Travis Credit Union employee in Antioch, recently shared with her co-workers how she saved a member $150 a month in payments by refinancing an auto loan. Her story is just one of many examples on how the credit union creates real value by helping members make smart financial decisions. The credit union s financial condition was the focus during our annual membership meeting on April 30. Pat and I were proud to report that Travis Credit Union remains financially strong, organizationally efficient and value-oriented. Financial performance The credit union s total assets grew by 6.8 percent to $2.3 billion in 2014, while Travis funded more than $650 million in loans. Credit union membership grew 3.1 percent to 167,000 member-owners last year. While market rates remain at historically low levels, the credit union increased its deposit rates in Over the past 15 months, Travis has increased the rates on share drafts, money market savings, retirement and regular certificates of deposit. We re also more efficient. The credit union spent less for each dollar earned in 2014 when compared to how much we spent to earn a dollar in Travis Credit Union maintains healthy reserves to handle various economic cycles. We have 12.2 percent of our assets in reserves, which is way above the seven percent required by federal regulators. Overall, Travis is the 13th largest credit union in California and the 67th largest in the country. Value in other ways Along with our financial strength, we added value in more concrete ways. In 2014, we relocated our Dixon branch to a larger building that offers better parking, a drive-through ATM and more visibility. We also completed our first financial solutions center in Vacaville. The new Nut Tree center uses advanced technology that allows our employees to spend more time directly helping members. Our efforts to improve our technology is another way we elevate the member experience. Last year, we upgraded all of our ATMs to take advantage of the latest advancements. Members can now make deposits without the need of deposit envelopes, which saves time, reduces costs and improves processing. Also, the latest upgrade of last November has made it easier for those online to navigate our website and to search for information. Education and community Perhaps one of the most tangible ways we provide real value is through our annual member scholarships. This issue of Smart Money Matters features the 20 recipients of our $1,500 scholarships. These high school seniors are Travis members who will begin their college studies this fall. Along with scholarships, the credit union and its staff supported more than 487 charities in Our employees donated an estimated 12,000 hours of their personal time in our communities. Pat and I are pleased we have been able to provide real value to our members last year. We are striving for an even better performance this year. Have a great summer! 2

7 Six Ways to Protect your Computer Another tip is to not use the same password for several accounts. If that password is stolen, the theft will affect many of your accounts. Also, don t share passwords on the phone, in texts or by . Be aware that legitimate companies such as Travis Credit Union will not send you s or texts asking for your password. If you get such a message, it s probably a scam. 3. Keep a copy of your computer files Backing up the data on your computer to an external hard drive, a removable disc or some other storage device is a practical way to keep your data safe and backed up if your computer becomes inaccessible or compromised. You read or hear about it in the news more often these days. A business or retailer s computer system is hacked, compromising the personal and financial data of thousands of its customers. While you don t have an Information Technology department to lean on to help you deal with hackers, there are things you can do to protect your personal computer from hacking and other online attacks. Here are six ways to protect your personal computer, according to the U.S. government website, OnGuardOnline.Gov. 1. Treat your personal information like cash Important information such as your Social Security number, credit union account numbers, credit card numbers and other accounts can all be used by identity theft thieves to steal your money or open new fraudulent accounts in your name. Treat your personal information like cash and be cautious about giving out this information online. Whenever you re asked for this information on a web form, text, an or even a phone message, consider whether the website is trustworthy. 2. Create strong passwords and keep them safe The longer the password, the tougher it is to crack. Experts suggest using at least characters for most home users. Mix letters, numbers and special characters in an unpredictable way that only makes sense to you. Avoid using your name, birthdate or common words. 4. Use Security Software that updates automatically Ensure your computers security software is automatically updated to protect it against the latest online threats. If you let your operating system, web browser or security software get out-ofdate, malware can infect and use your computer to access other computers, send spam or spy on your online activities. Also, it s a good idea not to buy security software from unexpected pop-up messages or s, especially ones claiming to have scanned your computer and to have found malware. 5. Shop at only secure online shopping websites If you re shopping or banking online, stick to websites that use encryption to protect your information as it gets transmitted. Look for the https at the beginning of the web address and on every page of the site. It is a sign that the page is encrypted. 6. Double check an online company before doing business with it Take the time to research a company before doing business with it. Do an online search using the business name and add a word such a reviews, complaints or scams. This will help you determine if the business is legitimate. Remember, just because an ad appears on a reputable site doesn t mean the ad is as trustworthy as the site. Do your homework and be sure the site is safe to use before you enter your personal and financial information. Source:OnGuardOnline.gov (707) or (800)
