7 CASE STUDY Rowena Rocoberte At 2am Rowena Rocoberte is alone in the still and quiet streets of Manila, as she makes her regular journey through the alleyways of the largest city in SE Asia to the bright bustling markets overflowing with fresh fruit and vegetables. Rowena relies on her instinct and experience to track down the best prices for the products that will soon fill her stall. For Rowena and her family, the decision to move to Manila in 1990 was a hard one as it was driven by the devastation caused by Mt Pinatubo eruption and the desire of Rowena s parents for a better education for their children. Rowena in her new and improved stall after two Grameen Australia loans The family s arrival in Manila was a time of both nervousness and excitement at the hope of income and a better life. But reality hit quickly when Rowena s family were forced to live in low cost housing and secure income was a struggle. Rowena s marriage to Jimmy Rocoberte was a time of great happiness, however the daily struggle for survival continued as Jimmy struggled to provide for his new wife in the unreliable and sometimes dangerous construction industry. When Rowena became a mother her frustration at her situation turned into determination to escape their situation for the sake of her children. She managed to scrape together enough money to open a very basic fruit and vegetable stall. Rowena only had the most simple of items to display her products including a table made out of scavenged bits of discarded wood. Rowena s original table used to display her produce
8 Initially Rowena had great hope for her new business, but a lack of capital meant that despite long hours every day Rowena could not build her business. A lack of assets meant traditional finance organisations would not even consider lending her money. She considered a loan from a local middleman but loan shark rates of 20-25% per month or more and the heavy-handed repayment tactics quickly deterred her. Rowena became frustrated at her lack of options, until one day a friend told her about a new organisation that was prepared to grant loans to committed members of slum communities. Rowena could not believe that any organisation would grant her a loan as she owned nothing of value, but she decided it was worth a chance. Grameen Australia s, Social Business Hub was indeed the answer to Rowena s troubles. She quickly completed all the compulsory business training, and was one of the first borrowers to receive a loan. The training encouraged Rowena to think more broadly about her business, resulting in her using her first loan of Php 8,000 to expand her range into high demand value add rice based products that she could sell at a higher margin. Her canny business instincts proved correct as the local mothers with little time to shop at the markets saw the advantage of Rowena s well-positioned and well-stocked store, with sales quickly growing. Rowena used her increased income to promptly repay her loan and take on a new loan. She used her Php 15,000 to purchase additional products in demand from her customers. The additional funds also enabled Rowena to finally construct a permanent, solid and more appealing concrete and tile stall where she is now better able to display her products. Rowena broad grin as she shows off her new steamer Rowena s vastly improved concrete stall funded from her second loan
9 Rowena is incredibly proud of her new well presented store, and her customers are amazed the high quality of her store and her produce. Rowena is very grateful for the opportunities Grameen Australia has provided her to use her entrepreneurial skills to change her life. She is now much more than making ends meet at home, so much so that she is now able to provide her children with a small daily school allowance something that Rowena is overwhelmed and utterly delighted that she is now able to do for her children. Rowena taking time out from her busy stall to walk her daughter to school
